Audition songs for tenors
These eight songs suit a tenor, from legit golden-age ballads to contemporary pop. Playbill's 2025 list suggests less familiar alternatives to the usual tenor songs, and two of those are here.
1. Younger Than Springtime
South Pacific. Music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Broadway, 1949. Ballad.
Lt. Joseph Cable sings this legit romantic ballad. It suits a golden-age tenor.
2. All I Need Is the Girl
Gypsy. Music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Broadway, 1959. Uptempo.
Tulsa sings this soft-shoe number. It suits a charming singer who dances.
Heard often: Listed as overused by Theatre Trip (2021).
3. Corner of the Sky
Pippin. Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Broadway, 1972. Uptempo.
Playbill calls it Pippin's signature song about what he wants. It suits a young, searching lead.
Heard often: Listed as overused by Ensemble Schools and Theatre Trip (2021).
4. Proud Lady
The Baker's Wife. Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. West End, 1989 (it never opened on Broadway). Uptempo.
Dominique sings it. Playbill suggests it as a less heard choice that shows boyish charm and range.
5. Bring Him Home
Les Misérables. Music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, English lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer. West End, 1985. Ballad.
Jean Valjean sings this prayer. It sits very high and soft, so it tests a sustained head voice.
Heard often: Listed as overused by Theatre Trip (2021).
6. Lost in the Wilderness
Children of Eden. Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. West End, 1991. Uptempo.
Cain and Abel sing it in the show. As a solo cut it suits a restless young man who wants more than he has.
7. 'Til I Hear You Sing
Love Never Dies. Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Glenn Slater, additional lyrics by Charles Hart. West End, 2010. Ballad.
The Phantom sings it solo. Playbill offers it as an alternative to the usual tenor ballads.
8. Santa Fe
Newsies. Music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman. Broadway, 2012 (the song first appeared in the 1992 film). Ballad.
Jack Kelly sings about the life he wants in Act 1, building to a big finish. Playbill calls it the usual tenor showcase.
Heard often: Theatre Trip lists it as overused (2021), under baritones.
